🎙️ DID YOU KNOW? with Producer Charlie

Neil Sedaka and Carole King were once high school sweethearts… and inspired each other’s hit songs.
Back in 1950s Brooklyn, two future legends were just teenagers in love.
Neil Sedaka and Carole King would both go on to help define the Brill Building sound and shape pop music history.
At one point, Sedaka was told he needed a hit—or risk losing his job. That pressure led to
“Oh! Carol,” a semi-autobiographical song inspired by King. It became a Top 10 hit in 1959 and launched his career.
Not to be outdone, Carole responded with “Oh! Neil,” written with her future husband Gerry Goffin.
While Sedaka’s version soared, her playful answer never cracked the Top 40.
Sedaka went on to deliver hits like “Calendar Girl,” “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” and
“Laughter in the Rain.” He also spent time with The Tokens, later famous for
“The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
After his passing earlier this year, Carole King shared a heartfelt tribute, crediting Sedaka as someone who inspired her to pursue songwriting.
