Before Barry Manilow made Could It Be Magic a hit, the song had a very different beginning.
In 1971, Manilow was part of a little-known “ghost group” called Featherbed, put together by Tony Orlando. Inspired by Chopin’s Prelude in C minor, Manilow reimagined the piece as a pop song, and Featherbed recorded the first version with an upbeat, brass-filled sound. It never became a major hit, but the story didn’t end there.
A few years later, Manilow reworked the song into the dramatic ballad fans know today, and it climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard chart. Then Donna Summer gave it new life with a disco version in 1976. One song… three very different chapters in music history.
