That iconic marimba solo in “Moonlight Feels Right” was recorded in just one take.

When NASA’s Artemis II mission got us thinking about “moon” songs, one standout was
Starbuck’s 1976 hit “Moonlight Feels Right.”

Starbuck Moonlight Feels Right

Written by lead singer and keyboardist Bruce Blackman, the song was inspired by a real-life girlfriend he knew while attending the University of Mississippi.
It started slow on the charts—debuting at No. 90—before climbing all the way to No. 3 on Billboard.

One of the most unforgettable parts of the track is Bo Wagner’s marimba solo right in the middle.
That dazzling 30-second break? Recorded in just one take—and it remains one of the most distinctive moments in pop music.

Wagner’s career stretched far beyond Starbuck. He appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club and
The Lawrence Welk Show, toured with acts like The Fifth Dimension and Liberace,
and later helped pioneer healthcare support for performers.

And in case you’ve ever wondered:
A marimba is larger than a xylophone, has a wider range, and produces a warmer tone—while a
xylophone has a brighter, sharper sound.
