The same song became a Top 10 hit for two different artists just one year apart.
In 1967, Dionne Warwick recorded “I Say a Little Prayer,” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song tells the story of a woman worried about her man serving in the Vietnam War.
One song. Two stars. Two Top 10 hits — just one year apart.
One year later, Aretha Franklin made the same song a major hit in her own style. Her version came together spontaneously when her background singers, the Sweet Inspirations, started reworking it while filling time during a recording session.
A few more fun facts:
- Dionne Warwick’s single featured “Theme from Valley of the Dolls” as its B-side.
- Aretha Franklin’s single had “The House That Jack Built” on the flip side.
- Both B-sides became hits too — a rare twist for one already-successful song.
- Burt Bacharach was unsure about Dionne’s version at first, even after recording 10 takes.
- Florence Greenberg of Scepter Records believed in the song and pushed for its release.
Pretty amazing that one song could become a hit twice — and in such different ways.
