Did You Know? w/ Producer Charlie: “I Will Always Love You” – Dolly or Whitney?!?

DID YOU KNOW? with Producer Charlie

Most people think Whitney Houston made I Will Always Love You famous—and they’re not wrong. But the story behind the song actually begins with Dolly Parton… and it’s not a love story at all.

Parton wrote the song in 1973 as a farewell to her longtime mentor, Porter Wagoner, who helped launch her career on his TV show. When she decided to go solo, this emotional goodbye became her way of saying thank you—and goodbye. 💔

“I just want the cash.” 😄

The song hit #1 on the country charts right away… but the story doesn’t stop there.

Years later, Elvis Presley wanted to record it—but there was a catch. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded half the publishing rights. Parton refused. Bold move… and it paid off. 💼

In 1992, everything changed again. At the request of Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston recorded the song for The Bodyguard. Her version became one of the biggest hits of all time, topping the charts for weeks.

And Dolly? She didn’t mind one bit.

“A lot of people say, ‘That’s Whitney’s song,’” she once said.
“And I say, ‘That’s fine… I just want the cash.’” 😄

She even used the earnings to invest back into her community in Nashville—turning a goodbye song into a lasting legacy.
