The theme from the 1972 horror film became Michael’s first No. 1 hit and even won a Golden Globe when he was just 14 years old. It was originally offered to Donny Osmond.

This track showed the first signs of a more grown-up Michael. It marked a turning point as the Jacksons moved beyond Motown and took more creative control on the 1978 Destiny album.

This song was first imagined as a duet between Michael Jackson and Prince. That collaboration never came together, so Michael took the song in his own direction.

Michael had known Vincent Price since he was 11 and believed he had the perfect voice to close out the song. The groundbreaking 14-minute video cost more than $500,000 and changed music television forever.

Siedah Garrett sang the duet with Michael, though many listeners did not realize it at the time. On tour, that vocal part was performed by backup singer Sheryl Crow, who later became a star herself.

Despite speculation, the song was not about Diana Ross or Princess Diana, both of whom were friends of Michael. It was actually inspired by a persistent groupie.
