The 1978 classic “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty has taken quite the journey over the years… and it all started with frustration.
After three years of legal battles with his former band Stealers Wheel, Rafferty finally found creative freedom—and poured it straight into this song. That sense of release may even echo in the final verse about a “new morning” and heading home.
Most people instantly recognize “Baker Street” because of that legendary saxophone riff.
That unforgettable solo was played by Raphael Ravenscroft—who was only paid a standard session fee at the time… despite creating one of the most iconic hooks in pop music history.
📊 The song’s impact was massive:
- Spent six weeks near the top of the Billboard Hot 100
- Helped push the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack out of the top spot
- Found new life years later thanks to a cover by Foo Fighters
🎙️ FUN FACT: Since 1992, “Baker Street” has been the official theme for Dave Ramsey’s radio show.
One listener even recalled a kid in a grocery store shouting, “Mom, we’ve gotta go… Dave Ramsey is starting!” 😄
Rafferty passed away in 2011 at age 63, and Ravenscroft followed three years later—but their work on “Baker Street” is still echoing everywhere today.
