The Beatles could go from a massive sing-along anthem to a haunting chamber-pop masterpiece like it was nothing.
Paul McCartney began writing “Hey Jude” as “Hey Jules,” meant to comfort John Lennon’s son Julian during his parents’ divorce. The song eventually turned into one of the Beatles’ most beloved records, famous for its long, emotional “na-na-na” ending.
And then there’s “Eleanor Rigby,” a song that barely sounds like a traditional Beatles track at all. Instead of the usual band setup, it features a dramatic string arrangement and tells a lonely, cinematic story in just a few short minutes.
